Improving Border Crossing Times on the Northern Corridor
The COMPETE transit team has been on the road traveling to border crossings along the Northern Corridor at Malaba, Busia, (Kenya/Uganda borders) and Gatuna (Rwanda/Uganda). The USAID COMPETE team along with members of the Seamless Transport Committee of the Northern Corridor and the National Single Window Project met with government officials and key players in the transit sector to familiarize them with the processes and procedures that need to be in place to move to a fully functioning Single Window system.
At Malaba and Busia, Ugandan officials agreed to take action to reduce the queues of trucks at these border crossings. In their MOU with the Seamless Transport Committee representatives of 7+ Ugandan government agencies led by the Ugandan Revenue Authority and the private sector, namely transport associations and banks agreed to undertake joint inspections of all import and export cargo and commence full 24/7 operations by January 31st, 2011.
